Tea break
Something different grabs my attention almost every day. I’m inspired by the people I meet, the things I do and the places I visit. Family, friends and colleagues are important to me. What motivates you? My zest for life, HR practices and recruitment trends, my garden and passion for baking all influence how I work. I’ve bundled up some of my thoughts and ideas into a few different collections.
So why not make yourself a drink, download my latest story and think about what you want to change? Go on, let yourself go and think crazy or outrageous. It’s how change happens.

Job descriptions or fashion sense? You choose ...
I’ve been promoting practical organisation designs and realistic job previews, not to mention job descriptions, which do what they say on the tin for what seems like ever …
If I’m honest, I want to do both
I’ve concluded that I want to do more of the things which I love, and for me, that includes working at the things I enjoy …
When a good CV becomes great
Sometime when I’m asked what makes a good written CV, I frequently respond that it’s all about self-interest. And when I’m asked what’s the best time, my response is …
Why is recruitment always the sitting target?
You’d think I’d be used to it after so many years, yet it still makes me flinch when I hear those three little words, “recruitment is broken” …
Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve …
When did you last wonder how things could’ve been different? And what did you do about it? All too often we live with the feeling of being …
Reinvention or same ol’ same ol’ … you decide
There are so many opportunities to change how we do something, although not all of them bring happiness or success …
Food for thought ...
I’ve concluded that I’m as addicted to Recruitment (and all things recruitment) as much as I’m addicted to all things food. Yes, and I’m finally admitting …
Recruitment chit chat
Back in the early nineties John Gray wrote about psychological differences between men and women – remember the Mars and Venus analagy? Although this stereotypical interpretation is …
Has recruitment has its day?
It’s a question I’ve been asking on and off for more than 20 years. My answers have varied …
What's in a name?
I’ve been known by many different names over the years and most of them polite. Come to think of it, they’ve all been polite …
Recruitment, back to basics
Hands up, I am not very good at listening to myself and the advice I often give to others. I am a bit of a magnet for other people’s problems and challenges. It just happens that way …
Help needed, apply within
Applying for jobs has never been a breeze, although some candidates find it so much easier than others to organise their thoughts, answer questions and stick with it.
Which door would you choose?
Job adverts are the front door to your business and work opportunities. They’re often read by your customers …
We’d like to invite you to an interview
How does this phrase make you feel? Throughout my career I’ve interviewed thousands of people and been interviewed – sometimes well and other times, I try to forget.
Are we making recruitment too difficult?
“Why don’t we simplify recruitment?” – it’s a loaded question and one I ask myself (as well as my clients) frequently. We dream of applications from amazing candidates …
Unicorns apply here
Are we making interviews complicated? It’s a question I’ve been asking myself for so many years, my head hurts!
A jar of good ideas
A piece which compares recruitment with making marmalade – surely not? Well, today was marmalade making day and you know me, I don’t do one thing at a time …
Recruitment essentials – feedback and good manners
“I didn’t get the job”, my heart sank and “I don’t know why” my heart sank even further. Momentarily I’m uncertain whether I’m more disappointed about the first or the second phrase …
Engaging opportunities – here’s the job I want
I love a pause button (almost as much as a delete button). Today, I’m encouraging us all to spend time thinking about how we engage with our audiences. What will motivate them to engage in the conversation? And what’s the story we want to tell?
Ghostly Tales
It’s time for the festive Masked Recruiter to get another airing. I didn’t expect that after all these years of writing about Candidate Experience, I’d still be hearing tales that would make my toes curl.
